Al Jarreau. JP/Arief SuhardimanWith over 1,500 musicians, 17 stages and around 70 shows a day for three consecutive days, it was probably only fair that Java Jazz, one of the biggest music events in Indonesia, pay tribute to the legends that once graced the world of jazz music locally and internationally.

The 2012 Jakarta International Djarum Super Mild Java Jazz Festival aimed big, featuring stars such as Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and the singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Stevie Wonder. However, performances also honored departed legends.

One such example is Bubi Chen, the Indonesian pianist of international fame, who passed away last month. He had been scheduled to play at this year’s Java Jazz.

“[Bubi] was an icon and a maestro and we realized that performance is a remedy for him. It gave him the spirit to survive. Since we first heard the news [of his departure], we had no intention of replacing his slot, but we changed it into a session to pay him respect,” festival program coordinator Eki Puradiredja said during the press conference leading up to the event.

Those performing at the “In Memoriam for Bubi Chen” show included guitarist Dewa Budjana and composer and pianist Indra Lesmana.

Longtime singer Bob Tutupoly was among those scheduled, along with Titiek Puspa and Grace Simon, to perform at the show paying respect to Bing Slamet, the actor, comedian and singer who passed away in 1974.

Performing musicians also paid tribute to the late Benyamin Sueb, the comedian and singer widely regarded as an icon for the Betawi people.

The festival also remembered international legends such as the late singer and composer Barry White through the Barry White Show, not a Barry White performance as reported earlier.

This year’s Java Jazz featured a number of collaborative projects. Those scheduled included collaborations between Indra Lesmana, Dwiki Dharmawan with Grammy Award-winning musician Maurice Brown, and local band Gugun and the Blues Shelter with Tony Monaco and Robert Randolph.

Saxophone player Dave Koz peformed with 57kustik, a band that originated from street musicians in Bandung, and singer Bobby McFerrin collaborated with Indonesian elements such as gamelan for his performance.

PT Java Festival Production’s chair Peter Gontha said that by remembering local legends the public would be aware of Indonesia’s history with jazz. “Jazz is not a something new in Indonesia, it has been here for several generations,” he said.   (indirect speech)

However, it did seem enthusiasm is expanding with each year. This year, people swarmed the Jakarta International Expo where the event was held, and long lines began forming over an hour before “special shows”, which required extra tickets, were scheduled to start.

The “special shows” featured Al Jarreau and the George Duke Trio, singer Erykah Badu, keyboardist and composer Herbie Hancock, guitarist and composer Pat Metheny and Stevie Wonder.

While the majority of festival goers were Indonesian, several languages, such as English and Japanese, were often heard among the crowd. “According to the records, the tourists were mostly from Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand Australia, Netherlands, and even America,” Peter said.  ( indirect speech)

Last year’s festival is said to have drew around 106,000, the event’s head of promotions Ressanda Tamaputra said.  (indirect speech)

Elyus Lanin, a Bekasi resident who has attended the festival since the beginning seven years ago, said the committee did a better job than last year organizing the festival.

“Compared to last year, there are less late [shows],” he said. (indirect speech)

Elyus said he came for the entire three days, and was quite satisfied. “I have to plan and organize [what to watch] carefully. There are so many musicians that I became overwhelmed. Maybe this doesn’t happen to others, but maybe I just like too many of them,” he said, laughing.  ( direct speech)
